Special Olympics Festival - $529,308 for Québec's special athletes

The 15th presentation of the Special Olympics Festival, held last night at the Palais des congrès de Montréal, succeeded in raising $529,308.

The benefit event, under the honorary co-presidency of Mr. Stéphane Achard, Senior Vice-President and General Manager of Business and Institutional Services, Desjardins Group, and Mr. Luc Villeneuve, President of Samson Bélair/Deloitte & Touche, is the principal source of funding for Special Olympics Québec. It brought together 700 business people, and 30 current and former professional and amateur athletes, including Marie-Claude Asselin, Steve Bégin, Alexandre Bilodeau, Steve Charbonneau, Isabelle Charest, Yvan Cournoyer, Mathieu Darche, Roseline Filion, Bruny Surin, Pierre Vercheval, 16 special athletes and Annie Pelletier, Patron of the SOQ movement for 15 years.

“Thanks to the support of companies and individuals who showed their generosity last night, we will be able to continue this year to provide our training programs and a competition league for more than thousands of athletes living with an intellectual disability across Québec” said Daniel Granger, Chairman of Special Olympics Québec.

Annie Pelletier, Patron of the SOQ movement, was delighted by the financial success of the evening. “Special athletes are real champions,” she declared. “Their determination and enthusiasm are a source of constant inspiration for me since 15 years. I hope to remain their patron for a long time to come, and I hope that others like me continue to believe in them.”

During the evening, guest artist Marie-Mai wowed the crowd with her great performance followed by a spectacular live auction. Among the 20 exclusives items put on the block: a helicopter ride with Guy Lafleur, a package in Las Vegas to meet Céline Dion, Cirque du Soleil, ski with downhill world champion Érik Guay, NASCAR with Patrick Carpentier and several other shows or sports and cultural events.

The success of the Special Olympics Festival is possible thanks to the generosity of several corporate partners such as Bell, Desjardins, Hydro-Québec, FGL Sports, the Club de hockey Canadien, evenko, Samson Bélair/Deloitte & Toucheand the SAQ.
