700 athletes in Pointe-Claire for the 2013 Special Olympics Québec Summer Games

On Thursday, July 4, the 2013 Special Olympics Provincial Summer Games will begin in Pointe-Claire. Until Sunday, July 7, 700 athletes living with an intellectual disability from 18 regions of Québec will take part in competitions held in ten sports: athletics, softball, bocce, powerlifting, golf, ten-pin bowling, rhythmic gymnastics, swimming and soccer.

During this four-day event, the athletes will be accompanied by over 200 coaches, volunteers and mission staff members.

The competitions will take place mainly on the John Rennie High School grounds, atTerra Cotta Park, at Valois Park and at the Pointe-Claire Aquatic Centre.   

The Games will begin on the morning of Thursday, July 4, with a torch relay through Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Longueuil, St. Helen’s Island, Montreal and Pointe-Claire. Twenty peace officers from 11 different Québec law enforcement agencies will take turns carrying the flame over a distance of approximately fifteen kilometers. They will be accompanied by two athletes from the Lake Saint-Louis region, Lena Baldoni and Stephan Quick. In the evening, the officers running the last leg will officially open the Games by lighting the cauldron during the opening ceremony.

Mr. Tom Quinn, honorary chairman of the Games and president and CEO of QSM Group Ltd., Mr. Bill McMurchie, mayor of Pointe-Claire, Olympic medalist Annie Pelletier, honorary patron of the Special Olympics Québec athletes for the past 16 years, and Mr. Mathieu Darche, former professional hockey player who played three seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, will be among the dignitaries present at the opening ceremony.

Annie Pelletier will also be on-site throughout the games to encourage the athletes.

The population is invited to attend the competitions and witness the athletic performances of Special Olympics athletes during the four days of the Games. The competition schedule is available atwww.specialolympicsquebec.ca.

Sports Experts teams up with the athletes

Special Olympics Québec (SOQ) and the organizing committee of the Pointe-Claire 2013 Provincial Summer Games are glad to announce that Sports Experts is lending its support as event partner. SOQ will use the funds granted to organize and stage this large scale event.  

Sports Experts’ commitment takes many forms. Mr. Tom Quinn, presidentand CEO of QSM Group Ltd. and owner of Sports Experts stores, is the honorary chairman of these major Games which will be held from July 4 to 7, 2013.
